         THANKSGIVING EVE

86th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade's "Inflation Eve"

Wednesday, November 27, 2013 – Let the Thanksgiving festivities begin! Every year on Thanksgiving Eve in New York City, the public gathers to watch a special event with their kids, where the giant helium balloon characters take shape and come to life, between 3:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M. The entrance to the balloon inflation is located near the #HotelBelleclaire, on Columbus Avenue near West 79th Street. Balloons will surround the Museum of Natural History and fill the area from West 77th to 81st Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE

thxg parade

Thursday, November 28, 2013 – Following the Thanksgiving Eve balloon inflation, join the immense crowd and bundle up for the 87th Annual #Macy’s #Thanksgiving Day Parade!

Giant inflated balloons, top marching bands, and performing artists on breathtaking floats are just part of the crowd-pleasing extravaganza at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The parade kicks off at 9:00 a.m. where more than 50 million home viewers and 3.5 million people line the streets to watch all the excitement starting at West 77th Street and Central Park West to Columbus Circle, turning onto Central Park South. From there, the parade travels on to Sixth Avenue — there are great spots between 59th and 38th streets, however, due to national broadcast needs, avoid 34th to 38th streets since it will be restricted. The parade wraps up in Herald Square at noon. For more details on the parade route, please click on the following link: http://www.marching.com/news/2013/2013-macys-parade lineup/2013_macys_parade_route_map.jpg

New characters such as Christmas Spongebob Squarepants, Finn and Jake from “Adventure Time”, Toothless from “How to Train Your Dragon” – and new whimsical float additions from Cirque du Soleil, “Despicable Me”, Lindt Chocolate, Royal Caribbean, and SeaWorld – will be joining the holiday tradition this year. A few artists to grace us with their voices on the floats will include Carrie Underwood, Gavin Degraw, Ariana Grande, Fall Out Boy, Kristen Chenoweth, and the Goo Goo Dolls. Lastly, a holiday treat for all children, the biggest star of all, Santa Claus, joins the parade with his sleigh by wishing everyone “Happy Holidays” and a “Merry Christmas”.

Still looking to book a room? You can catch all of the festivity goodness by staying at the #HotelBelleclaire, just a short seven minute walk to the Macy’s inflation balloon area on Thanksgiving Eve and the start of the parade on Thanksgiving Day.

After this eventful morning, another grand festivity awaits – the big turkey dinner begins…alas, we feast! Whether it’s sharing a delicious meal at home or dining out, it is always a cherished moment amongst our loved ones. If you’re staying with us during Thanksgiving, here are some great local restaurants providing pre-fixe menu settings: the Ocean Grill, Atlantic Grill (near Lincoln Center), Ouest, Luce Restaurant and Enoteca, Pappardella, Sarabeth’s, and Bistro Ten 18…can anyone say “Gobble Gobble?” Happy Thanksgiving!

Big Deals, Big Steals: Black Friday & Cyber Monday

 blk fri

Rise and shine early birds! Ah, the morning after Thanksgiving. One would think most would relax after stuffing their faces, yet it’s quite the opposite. Some don’t even go to bed and line up around midnight to try and snag the most sale items. Remember to come prepared and fully rested for one of the biggest shopping days of the year – Black Friday!

Some doorbuster deals on the Upper West Side include Loehmann’s, Victoria’s Secret, Gamestop, and Sephora. Even Apple is having Black Friday deals and is revealing the sale on Thanksgiving Day; you might want to keep an eye out for that snag!

Could the sale possibly continue? Yes, the Monday following Thanksgiving is known as Cyber Monday when many people purchase exceptional bargains online. Psst, here’s an insider secret: one of the online deals that will be live on December 2nd will kick off with saving 30%-50% on stays at any of Triumph Hotels’ six New York City hotels; so stay tuned! For more information, click on the following link: www.triumphhotels.com/cybermonday. Happy shopping!

United Nations General Assembly

united nations

Every year, the city fills up for a major event that is being held at the United Nations Plaza. This is where all 193 members around the globe get together and discuss important matters at an event known as the United Nations General Assembly. This year’s 68th session begins on September 17, 2013. Such discussions and decisions cover peace and security, admission of new members, budgets, etc.  This year’s high level meeting will discuss disability and development and on nuclear disarmament. These issues are vital in our society. Even the legendary Stevie Wonder calls for action for the UN Convention on the Rights on Persons with Disabilities to be “signed, sealed and delivered by all countries, for everyone’s sake”.

During this big event, stay @HotelBelleclaire where we conveniently offer government per diem rates. Now, what else is there to do during the UNGA week might you ask? Well, in the world of sports, the New York Islanders are playing against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, September 21st, 2013. Are you a Yankee fan? Try the NY Yankees VIP Baseball Stadium tour and lunch with a Yankees Legend on Friday, September 27 at 2pm.

For all you music lovers out there, a few concerts are rocking out at Barclays Center and the Beacon Theatre. The celebrities that will be ready to pour their hearts out to the crowd are Earth, Wind & Fire, Lionel Ritchie, and one of my favorites, Michael Bublé.

Looking for a more calming atmosphere near the Hotel Belleclaire? Check out the Central Park Movie & TV sites walking tour and experience a slice of Hollywood and see what it feels like to be in the same spot where “Harry Met Sally” was filmed or George Clooney and Michele Pfeiffer in “One Fine Day”… Home Alone 2 anyone? Always a classic! Choose between 1, 2, 5 hour or custom tours. I already have myself signed up!

“Summertime and the Livin’ is Easy”

Bring out those beach towels and rock those new aviator shades because it’s official; summertime is here!

Blog picture Central Park

Spending the summer in NYC? Don’t sweat it! Here is a list of some cool, summer events that will have you “buzzing” around the city…

1.  First and foremost, we, at the Hotel Belleclaire, will be hosting complimentary “Summer Socials” throughout the summer. (I know, I’m getting pretty excited myself!) We encourage everyone to stop by and take a moment out of their busy schedules to come celebrate the summer with us, on us!

2.  Enjoy a relaxing night out by bringing a friend, a blanket, and some popcorn to the Bryant Park Summer Film Festival

Blog- Bryant Park

Free outdoor film screenings are a joy of New York summers, and the Bryant Park series is particularly lovely. The movies start at dusk, but locals start trickling in when the park’s lush grassy lawn opens at 5pm—many folks are still in their work clothes and just head over straight from the office with take-out food and blankets in tow. (Follow suit and arrive early; the lawn gets pretty crowded by sundown.) For more information, visit bryantpark.org.

3.  Enjoy Free, Outdoor, Live Music at Central Park’s Summerstage

Blog- Summer Stage

Central Park Summer Stage is New York’s premier free performing arts festival. Founded in 1986, it brings performances of superior artistic caliber, free of charge, to large and diverse audiences. Through inclusive and eclectic programming, SummerStage provides an important forum for emerging and established artists, and ideas, and exposes its audiences to many different types of artistic and cultural expression. Programming areas include World and American music, modern dance, spoken word, electronic music, and family programming.

SummerStage is free (except for a few big-name benefit concerts) and open on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your sunscreen and get ready to dance!

4.  Enjoy a selection of song and dance at the River to River Festival

Blog- River to River

Over 150 events in 30 days at 28 sites. Transformative, investigative art in unexpected places across Lower Manhattan. River To River extends the life of dance along the East River and immerses the Hudson in contemporary music and investigative installations.

Plan Ahead: Fourth of July’s Main Events:

5.  Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Competition (Word to the wise: Do not attend or watch on a full stomach)

Blog- Nathan's Hot Dogs

An annual hot dog eating competition that is held each year on July 4 at Nathan’s Famous Corporation, at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The top male and top female finishers from each qualifier will earn a trip to compete at the ESPN televised finals at the original Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island on July Fourth.  This year’s ESPN show will air on July 4th at 1PM Eastern.

6.  Macy’s Fireworks

Blog- Fireworks

Now in its 35th year, the world-famous fireworks show is set to dazzle millions once again. Whether you’re watching it live in NYC or at home on NBC, get set for a spectacular show like no other! This year, they have a surprise celebrity guest who’s been helping create the entire show!

7.  If you enjoy sports, the Mets All Star Game is not the one to miss!

Blog- Mets Game

The Mets will host the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in July 2013 at Citi Field! Baseball’s best players will descend on New York City for three days of events at Citi Field leading up to the 84th All-Star Game, scheduled to be played on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. It’s the first time the Midsummer Classic will take place at the home of the Mets since 1964.

8.  Become French for a day at Bastille Day (Must do: Indulge in a delicious Nutella crepe!)

Blog- France

Indulge your inner Francophile during this celebration of France’s independence. Held on three avenue blocks closed to traffic, the fest boasts tasty treats like crêpes and cheeses, Macaron Café macarons ($2) and baked goods from patisserie Financier, as well as sets by accordion players and other musicians, cultural dances like the cancan, and kiddie-friendly activities such as face painting.

9.  If you enjoy classical music, NY Philharmonic Concert in the Parks is an event you don’t want to miss!

Blog- NY Phil

The Philharmonic goes green, kicking off the free summer outdoor concert series with a performance in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Alan Gilbert leads the ensemble through a lively program of Respighi and Tchaikovsky.

10.  Catch a Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake Concert!

Blog- Justin

Justin Timberlake will bring sexy back to Yankee Stadium — and he’s bringing Jay-Z with him. The two music titans will co-headline the stadium in the Bronx on July 19, part of a short tour titled “Legends of The Summer.”

11.  Cool off at the Governors Island Swim

Blog- 10

Spend the morning jumping off a ferry boat and circling a piece of Manhattan at this challenging 2-Miler around the birthplace of New York City, with great views of Lower Manhattan, Jersey City, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and, of course, Governors Island itself.

12.  Go back in time to some Shakespeare in the Park

blog-shakespeare

Shakespeare in the Park is an annual event that is held at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. It is produced by The Public Theater, and attendance is free, provided that guests wait in line for tickets on the day of the performance. Shakespeare in the Park includes two productions over the course of the summer, and one of New York City’s most beloved summer traditions.

13. Devour delicious meals at NYC’s Restaurant Week

Blog- Food

Every summer and winter, Restaurant Week NYC returns, with more than 300 restaurants offering three-course dining deals for lunch ($24.07) and dinner ($35). Each year Restaurant Week NYC adds trendy newcomers to a long list of fine-dining standbys, drawing bargain-hunting New Yorkers to try out new spots and revisit old favorites on the cheap.

13.   Zip line during Summer Streets of NYC

blog- zip line

For this three-Saturday event, nearly seven miles of NYC turf from the Brooklyn Bridge all the way to Central Park will be cleared of vehicles, creating a pedestrian paradise complete with food and entertainment. This edition’s offerings are still being finalized, but previous years have included free bike rentals, a rock-climbing wall, a zip line and picnics along the route.

14.  Watch some of your favorites battle during a match at the U.S. Open. While you’re at it, try to score an autograph! (Definitely on my bucket list!)

blog- tennis

For two weeks, Flushing Meadows–Corona Park will be the tennis capital of the world for the US Open 2013. While Wimbeldon has its white, New Yorkers bring the party to the National Tennis Center with a celebrity-studded crowd, international food vendors and live musicians performing on the grounds—not to mention tennis’s top pros.

15.  Rave the last days of summer at Electric Zoo
blog- electric

Made Event is back with another round of its three-day house, electro and techno fest. If you enjoy this music, this is the place to be!

Now that your itinerary for this summer is all set, round up a bunch of family & friends and kick off the summer right with some great company and cool shades! Again, enjoy the summer because unfortunately, it only lasts three months!

Hoping for Resilience in the Aftermath of Sandy

As you likely know, tragedy struck the northeast on Monday, October 29. Hurricane Sandy barreled toward the coast that evening, leaving many wondering the outcome of her arrival.

Many homes destroyed and public utilities and services left damaged and useless. A national crisis is on our hands as citizens of Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and other states wait desperately for relief. In our own city—a global center of commerce, creativity, media, and diplomacy—the effect is beyond traceable.

Hotel Belleclaire proudly calls New York City its home, and is equally proud to be part of New York State and to share its borders with New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and others affected by the storm. Our hearts break for those who cannot replace what has been lost, but we know with certainty that our people are resilient. Our thoughts are with the community, and we tip our hats to those joining in the relief efforts—among them our friends, our employees, our guests, our neighbors. Thank you.

How You Can Help:

The American Red Cross and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City are accepting donations to assist with Hurricane Relief. Contributing to these causes will not only provide immediate aid needs, such as clean water, food, and hygiene supplies, but it will also help with the long-term relief and restoration efforts.

Take a Bite Out of the Big Apple: An Insider’s Guide to NYC Walking Tours

Among New York City’s many charms the fact that you can explore the city easily by foot, visiting world-renowned attractions, acclaimed museums and standout dining destinations. Strolling the streets that surround Hotel Belleclaire is a great way to unearth overlooked neighborhood favorites, and taking your travels further afield allows you to discover under-the-radar areas. Hotel Belleclaire is located in the heart of the Upper West Side, one of the city’s most walkable areas. Central Park, Riverside Park, Midtown and Columbia University all provide ample scenery and activities to keep you entertained for a morning, afternoon, or an entire day.

NYC Walking Tours:

Central Park Reservoir Loop

From Hotel Belleclaire, walk east on 77th Street. When you reach Columbus Avenue, look to the left to see the American Museum of National History, one of the world’s most famous museums. When you reach Central Park West, turn around and take in the rows of stately apartment buildings across from the park. These buildings – most erected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries – are part of the Central Park West Historic District, and display some of the city’s finest Neo-Renaissance architecture. Enter the park and take one of the winding paths north to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. The 1.5-mile loop around the Reservoir is one of the most picturesque paths in New York City, providing stellar views of the city’s skyscrapers over the placid water.

Hudson River Greenway

If you’re seeking a break from the claustrophobia of the concrete jungle, walk west on 77th Street to Riverside Park. Just two blocks from Hotel Belleclaire, this verdant strip of greenery and trees borders the Hudson River and provides a great place to find a cool breeze. Walk across the park to the riverfront and head north along the Hudson River Greenway. This popular biking, jogging and walking trail provides peerless views of New Jersey, and extends north to Riverbank State Park, which extends into the Hudson and provides a variety of athletic and arts experiences.

Broadway Lights

The city’s most famous thoroughfare, Broadway bisects the island of Manhattan, making its way through many of NYC’s notable neighborhoods on its way from Inwood Hill to Battery Park. Hotel Belleclaire is located at the corner of 77th and Broadway, making it easy to turn the corner from the front door to start this walking route. Head downtown on Broadway, taking time to admire the early-20th century architecture of the Upper West Side. Broadway doesn’t run parallel to the rest of NYC’s avenues, meaning it crosses each avenue to create one of the city’s famed squares. Here are some of the unique intersections you’ll pass through during your walk:

  • Lincoln Square (at 65th Street)
  • Columbus Circle (at 59th Street)
  • Times Square (45th Street)
  • Herald Square (34th Street)
  • Madison Square (23rd Street)
  • Union Square (14th Street)

Columbia University

The densely populated, skyscraper-filled island of Manhattan is the last place you’d think to find an expansive, beautiful college campus. But just a few miles north of Hotel Belleclaire sits Columbia University, an Ivy League institution and a six-block respite from the concrete and steel of the city. Walk up Broadway from Hotel Belleclaire and take in the essence of the Upper West Side. It’s one of Manhattan’s most diverse neighborhoods, featuring cuisine of all kinds and residents of all origins. When you reach 116th Street, enter Columbia’s gates and take the tree-lined walk east to the open lawn. The Beaux-Arts buildings that line the green courtyards were built near the turn of the 20th century – the most famous structure is the Low Memorial Library, an 1895 building that is listed as a National Historic Landmark.

Take the first step on your tour of NYC by making reservations at Hotel Belleclaire today.
