While it's easy to spend all day in a single New York City cultural institution, once a year, visitors get to sample a variety of them over the course of three hours. In the 2013 edition of the Museum Mile Festival, seven of the country's finest museums will offer free admission amid a festive car-free block party along Fifth Avenue, with live music, street performers and activities for kids, rain or shine. (Three additional institutions are closed for renovations or construction but will still be participating in the festival.) From The Metropolitan Museum of Art at one end of the mile to El Museo del Barrio at the other, this is your chance for a bargain crash course in New York City culture.
Time and Location: Festivities begin on the steps of The Jewish Museum’s landmark building at 92nd Street at 5:45pm.
Address: 1109 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10128
